SUPERGIRL (2026)
This was not necessarily a sneak preview that I was looking forward to. I say this because in general DC historically has not made that many movies that I have liked. Like the last Superman movie was really rough, mostly due to the casting. Getting rid of Henry Cavil was not a smart choice, but compared to Marvel, DC does make the best choices. This movie had Warner Bros. has the production company and they to can be hit or miss.
This movie focuses on Supergirl's birthday and how it is impacting her emotionally. She doesn't know where she fits in and is trying to find herself while traveling with her dog. She gets pulled into a slavery war, but only because she needs to find the antidote for her dog. While doing this she sees the horrors of that the universe has to offer and that she can have an impact in the fight for justice.
The casting for this film was...interesting. Once again they brought back David Corenswet as Superman. He did a slightly better job this time, but that was mostly because he had so little screen time. He just doesn't have the presence of Superman. As an actor there seems to be a lack of self confidence that shows through in his acting. Coming back to the role he seems to feel more in his skin, but him being in the role negatively impacts the scenes he's in. Milly Alcock did a really good job as Supergirl. She did a great job presenting emotions and handled the action scenes well. There is one thing that I want to address about her that isn't on her but on people in general. Last night I posted my quick video review of the movie and people were saying that they didn't want to see the movie because of her appearance. I had to delete comments of people modifying a picture of her to look like a Neaderthal. People are just mean and vial. I deleted those comments because of how disgusting they were. Our society is too obsessed with how people look vs. how good of a job they can do. Alcock did a good job with this movie. Her looks should not be attacked, but how she brings a character to life is what is important. The pain that she was able to convey when she screamed in space was moving. People need to stop focusing on appearances and just being bullies. Alcock is still a young actress and I think her future looks bright because of her acting ability. Then there was Mr. Universe...I mean David Krumholtz that played Supergirl's father. Super geeks will recognize him and I wish that they would have used him slightly more because he is also a very good actor. Then there was also Eve Ridley who played Ruthye, the girl trying to convince Supergirl to help her get revenge for the death of her family. I felt like her acting felt a little flat. Not Kristen Stewart flat, but she needs to work more on being able to show emotion on her face and in her body language. This may come as she makes more movies, but as Kristen Stewart shows it is a skill that some actors are never able to develop. Then there was also Jason Momoa as Lobo. I want a Lobo focused film. I wanted him to have more screen time.
CGI...some parts were better then others. Krypto, Supergirl's dog, felt very CGI heavy. I know they had him do stuff a normal dog couldn't, but I wish they would have spent more time making him feel a bit more realistic. There were times where he was ok, and times he was not. There was consistency issues like they were rushed. I think the parts where they were the most successful was in the vehicle (ships/bikes...) area and in the collapse of Krypton's core. I also liked the makeup effects like on both Lobo and the singer in the bar. Also as a side note, I don't feel like the IMAX experience is worth it for this film. So you would be fine paying less for the normal theater experience.
Overall, I would have to give this movie 4 stars out of 5 or a B. It had both good and bad parts, but overall it was one of the strongest DC movies produced in a long time. The question is are they going to be able to keep it up or not? We'll see.
The Event: I'm doing this separate from the movie because this can have a huge impact on how a person goes into the movie and can impact their emotional state. I did like how Regal picked up responsibility and organized the different lines this time. They had the people with general admission tickets go to one side of the massive staircase and the VIP guests to the other, with the escalators in the middle. Where the event failed this time was in the workers that Warner Bros. sent to run the event. Some of them were nice and some of them, not so much. Companies have to think about the total experience of people. Just because someone isn't in the VIP section doesn't mean that they could not be social media influencers or that they even have a network in which they share their experience. All guests should be treated with curtesy and I both had a negative experience with one of their reps and saw the reps not be nice to others as well. Only one of the reps was nice. Warner Bros. needs to reevaluate who they have working at these events and how things are done. They had also removed the backgrounds so that people couldn't do impressions after the movie in front of them. That's why part of my video had weird lighting, because I was trying to film my review in front of the light up movie poster. So far the crew that handled that stuff the best was the ones that ran the preview for Ballerina. They even brought in lights to help people with social media posts so that they weren't doing videos in poor lighting. They were also cool because they gave out the extra swag to the general people after they gave it out to the VIPs. People do notice this and it impacts how people feel towards production companies. All of these things impacts the full experience.
