The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)
Last night I got to go to the sneak preview of the movie. I had already seen the first 20 minutes at the Disney early preview preview. It was interesting to focus this time on people's response to what was happening, including Grogu tapping on the Mandalorian's helmet.
The plot of the film is that the Mandalorian is working for the New Republic hunting down the remnants of the Imperial leadership. The problem is that the Mandalorian has a habit of killing them instead of bringing them back alive to be interrogated. This time he is sent to the Hutts to do them a favor so that he can get info on his next mark. Any time Hutts are involved things get "messy" and Grogu is along for the ride.
The acting for this movie was great. The characters were able to both pull on your heart strings while making you laugh. Some of the laughs were spots like characters pointing where the bad guy went to Grogu interacting with beings his own size. Your heart strings are pulled in scenes like where Grogu has to disobey an order from his father. I will admit that I wish there were more scenes where the Mandalorian has his helmet off, but there was a good fight sequence where it was off for awhile. Even though Sigourney Weaver had overall little screen time, the time she was on she brought a stiff humor to the scene including her interaction with Grogu. Grogu stole the show. I have to give props to the whole team that brought Grogu to life. As a fun thing to do during the film, count how many snacks Grogu gets to eat.
Special effects over all were great. I did notice a few thigs though. First I saw the preview preview in a different theater from the sneak preview, but both were on an IMAX screen. Your experience is shapped by where you see the film. In the first screening the color was fine I nothing stood out negatively. In the sneak preview though for the same first 20 minutes I noticed some problems. The scenes that had a lot of lighting, like on the snow world, everything felt to bright. The characters were blury/fuzzy. There was also a weird color outline on the character with the left side of them being a pink hue and the left having a blue hue. I think that this was impacted by how each theater had their settings set. I also felt that many of the scenes on Nal Hutta were not has crisp as they should have been for the wide shots. This could have also been due to the settings or I actually wonder if corners were cut with all of the Disney layoffs. Disney has been making bad choices and I think that this may be just the start of it showing in their products. For good effects, how they did the Hutts was enjoyable. Rotta felt very likeable and I hope he is used more moving forward.
For this film we had for assigned tickets and took some friends with us. One of our friends has a background in wildlife biology and had a fun time after the film telling us which real creatures he thought had influenced the creature designers on the film. Both of our friends seemed to like the film even without them being die hard Star Wars fans. I did enjoy this film much more then the last 5 Star Wars movies combined (they were that bad overall). At the same time there was something about this film that I can't put my finger on that made it not feel like a movie. It felt like just watching a whole bunch of episodes of the Mandalorian back to back with no commercials. I can't explain why I felt this, but I did. Maybe they had too distinctive of pauses between sections that made it feel like the chapters of a TV show. I'll give it 4.5 stars out of 5 or a A-. Not a perfect score due to both the failures I noticed with the IMAX screening and the unfinished special effects/backgrounds.
The event itself was super disorganized. The theater didn't want to do anything to help manage the different lines, and the event organizer didn't do anything to help either. There were a mix of people with assigned tickets and then people with general admission tickets that were only supposed to get in based on the remaining seats after assigned ticket holders had gotten in. Everyone got mixed together and no one was doing anything to try and organize the people. This led to people cutting the line and leaving a bad experience for people. Both the theater and the event organizers need to take responsibility for the impact that their disorganization has on the customer experience. We had assigned tickets and luckily we got seats because we were near the front of the mob due to us getting there hours before the film started. I have noticed that since movie previews moved to this theater that the experience has gotten "messy" and are not organized like they were when the theater off of Hampden was the main theater. I fell like the staff there just cared more for the customer experience. The event I would have to give 2 stars out of 5 or a D. The only reason why they got a D instead of an F was because they brought a lot of posters for people to take after the film..... at the same time they didn't monitor how many posters people were taking and I did see a few people go over to an empty table looking for one. So....I actually will drop them to 1 star or a F grade. Much improvement needs to happen.
