Shin Godzilla (2016)

I got the chance to see this film in theaters for its 4k Remaster release. Even though this film was made in 2016 it still had the look and fill of the old school Godzilla films. Since I hadn't seen the older version of this film I noticed no difference with what ever the 4k remaster was supposed to be. If the film was 'fixed' you couldn't tell because it was still rough. Watching the film it felt like a historical documentary remake. Like some of the older programs on a channel like the History channel, before they stopped focusing on history. The whole film was very business like and didn't really do much character development.
Spoilers: The film starts out with a weird creature crawling out of the water. It looked nothing like Godzilla and at first I thought that it was the creature that Godzilla would be fighting in the film, but no. It turned out that it was Godzilla and he had to evolve like a cursed Pokémon into its mega stage. The changes were weird, but some of the models were high detailed. Like one of them had interesting gill structures. There were too many characters in the film and the producers/director/script writers did nothing to build emotional attachment to the characters. Some of the film starts to narrow down to focus on one team and them trying to figure out a response to Godzilla. They come up with getting a specific chemical inside of Godzilla to basically put him is stasis. Then at the end once they had Godzilla in a temporary frozen state there is a zoom in on its tail and there are a whole bunch of mini demon looking creatures breaking away from it. It was a super odd way to end the movie and left you feeling that it was half finished. Godzilla movies usually have a clearer ending and this one left you hanging like a part two that would clear up those questions would be quickly released, but as far as I know there has been no follow up to that specific thing.
Of all of the Godzilla movies I have seen this one was probably the worst. Between the documentary feel and the unfinished end it was just so roughly made that it seemed that whoever was the power behind the film had no love for the genre or Godzilla specifically. It was also so different from other Godzilla movies that it felt like they were overreaching just to try and get a half built idea on the screen. 1 star out of 5 or a F.
