Captain America: Brave New World

Before going to this movie I read a few early reviews and they mostly focused on one thing, Sam Wilson is not Captain America and because of this the movie sucked. I will admit, one of the reasons that I was never able to get into Dr. Who was because they kept changing the actor who played the part (they've also done this with Bond but no one seems to have as big of an issue with that). I knew that this was coming from my experience reading comic books. I will also admit that I'm not really a fan of Anthony Mackie, he's really stiff in his acting. At the same time this movie actually addressed Sam Wilson's personal struggle with taking up the shield. There was both interactions with other and self talk about regrets with not taking the serum (which was interesting since it let the audience know that they had finally perfect the super soldier serum and that it was an option). There was also a conversation between Sam and Bucky that went a little long but addressed some of the worries around Sam being Captain America. Watching the movie I did find myself relaxing my views a little on Sam based on how they structured the movie and showed the struggle he was going through. I think it would have been better if they would have left him as the Falcon and then had this be a Falcon movie. I think billed that way this would have been a great movie that would have had better acceptance. As a Captain America movie, it just did not have the same emotional pull. The love of Chris Evans Captain America come from him being a little guy with big heart that got changed into a super soldier. Sam was already a fighter in the form of the Falcon before he became Captain America. People also did not have as much of his back story as we did of Steve Rogers which had helped people to build a deeper connection to that version of the character.

The movie itself was a little disjointed. They rolled out information in ways that didn't feel right or make sense. For example like Sam's interactions with Sidewinder after they caught him felt weird and didn't make sense. Sidewinder became too helpful too fast. The Bucky and Sam conversation, while meaningful felt too placed since there really hadn't been anything relating to Bucky up to that point. It just seemed like the production team and writers made so odd choices to try and put the story to life.

The acting over all wasn't that bad. I will admit that I like Harrison Ford in good guy parts and him doing characters where they could be seen as the bad guy seem harder for him to pull off. The one person that really stood out for me was Danny Ramirez playing Joaquin Torres (the new Falcon). He played the adorable side kick perfectly and pulled you into caring about what happened to him. Also Shira Haas playing Ruth Bat-Seraph was also a great role and I hope that she takes over the Black Widow role in the franchise. They did a great job of showing her as a fighter and as a person, like her finding Bucky 'interesting'(trying not to give spoilers). Then there was the makeup job for Sterns (the villain). It looked like it should have been in a zombie movie. I know that there has been Marvel zombies spins, but this was not supposed to be one. It seems like there were a lot of bad choices made by the production team.

Overall, it wasn't a bad movie. I wouldn't pay to see it more then once in theaters, but I would buy the movie to add to my Marvel collection. When it comes to Marvel movies it is no where near the Avengers movies, but it is better then any of the Ant Man movies. Yes I do most of the Ant Man movies at the very bottom of the Marvel list.

Also just as a side note, AMC was selling Captain America related goods and Mommy Geek found a very shinny wallet that she got.
It's very shinny.
