Nosferatu (2024)
The movie does mix aspects of the original Nosferatu movie with aspects of the Dracula version of the story. Spoiler: I will say that the ending follows the Nosferatu version, but if you are not familiar with the original movie then you may be in for a surprise if you are expecting the Dracula ending.
Has someone that is very familiar with the literature/ folklore around vampires I did not enjoy what they did with the character of Ellen, the female lead. Instead of her just having the influence of the vampire this movie took it into full possession which is not correct. I would have expected this kind of behavior and physical impact in other types of horror films. It felt out of place and unnecessary. I blame this choice on the director (Robert Eggers), producer, and writter and they showed a complete lack of understanding of not only the vampire mythos, but of horror in general. Of Lily-Rose Depp I will say that she did what she could with what she was given. If this would have been a demon or some other type of possession film then her performance would have been amazing. In this film it felt overdone, forced, and super out of place.
The rest of the casting was ... interesting... Nicholas Hoult has been popping up in a lot of productions lately. He is a good actor, but in this film it was like he was being held back which ended up in a lack luster performance. Aaron Taylor-Johnson suffered from the same thing. He seem awkward in every single scene he was in. There was a massive disconnect where it was like he didn't even want to do this production. That may have or have not been the case, but the disconnect between the actor and performance could be felt. The director had no idea how to use the amazing power house that is Willem Dafoe. I was super excited that he was in this film, but they gave him so little screen time. All of his scenes felt rushed.
Orlok was also an issue but for different reasons. The original Nosferatu film created a very distinctive looking vampire. The image has been repeated many times and is even the look for a specific species of vampire. Those familiar with vampire games/series like Vampire the Masquerade. The features are very rat like and hairless. A recent film that did the look well was The Munsters (2022). This version the look of the character entirely distracted me from the performance. The made the horrible choice of throwing on a nice full mustache. I understand that they may have wanted to bring in some of the imagery of Vlad, who was the inspiration for Dracula, but the whole point of the Nosferatu line is that the original creators needed a different look then Dracula so that they could get around the copy right laws. By adding this to this version it destroys the original creativity that was a part of building the Nosferatu mythos. The makeup also had no rat like features. They could have at least made the teeth more stylized. The makeup was a total let down and showed more disconnect between the creators behind the film and the medium they were working with.
There were just so many huge issues with this film that it combined to make a total flop. I have to give this film 0 stars or a F-, one of the lowest scores I have ever given any movie. Even cheap 'B' class movies show more effort in a project.
The one great thing about this movie the marketing team did great work with the design of the AMC popcorn bucket.
The level of detail they put into this was amazing. This is the only popcorn bucket that I have not bought on the second hand market. The quality was great and the price was perfect. I was so happy that they had one on Christmas when I went to the film, because many theaters were selling out of them before the movie even came out.
