Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
As my followers know, I'm much more of a Marvel girl than a DC fan, and I was not sure what to expect from this film. The first Aquaman movie was ok, and on the better side of DC movies. Mommy Geek on the other hand was super excited to see this film since she is a fan of Aquaman.
I was pleasantly surprised with how good this film actually was. I would say that it was even better then the first Aquaman film. One of the reasons for this is that the character interactions were much more complex. An example of this is the interaction between Aquaman and his brother. When they get to the island they get a chance to talk and this helps to build a deeper understanding of their relationship while showing basic brother tropes, like where Aquaman tricks his brother into eating a cockroach. (Yes, that does happen so be ready for it if you have a weak stomach). The first film was much more action driven, whereas this film has action and character development. Another fun example of this is seeing Aquaman learning how to 'dad' and dodging pee. This film in a way mirrored how Marvel films bring in humor to help humanize there characters and the only other time when this was done well in a DC film was when Aquaman sat on Wonder Woman's rope. This film made me think that DC finally found writers that can give complex life to a film.
The acting was pretty good in this film, but I was wanting to see more of Atlanna (Aquaman's mother) and Nuidis Vulko (played by Willem Dafoe). The special effects were also good for the most part. Nothing really impactful, but there were no spots where I would call them out for making mistakes or just bad CGI.
The story brought in a dark trident that holds corrupting power. In a way it felt too much like The One Ring from Lord of the Rings. Black Manta gets ahold of it and is warped even more then he had been before to the point of risking all of humanity is his quest for revenge. Aquaman has to team up with his brother (which the creatures they use for escape were done very well and this section of the film could cause you to want a pet octopus). We even have the scientist that sided with Black Manta finally grow a set and challenge Black Manta in his own ways.
The future of Aquaman....I'm hoping that there is more Aquaman films, because these movies are getting better as they go. I just hope that they bring in some other villain instead of Black Manta. Overall I would give this film 4.5 stars out of 5 or a B+. Also don't bother to stay for the extra scene after the credits. It was totally useless and just gross. Where as normally these scenes are designed to help build up the next movie, here you just get Aquaman's brother putting a cockroach on a hamburger.
