Crypticon 2023: Friday
So, Friday started with me showing up super early since I was the first panel of the con (no pressure). Once we got all checked in I went to the room to play around with the technology to make sure I knew how everything worked. Then we had a quick lunch at the hotel since they had a little food table set up. The hotel's dinning room is only open for breakfast so getting food at this place can be hard. After that there was a little bit of time to kill so we checked out the dealer's room. They had a lot of cool classic horror items for sell and I even adopted a new bat plushie. Mommy Geek even found it cute and that is rare for her since she is not fond of bats.
My panel at 6pm was How to Geek Your Education. The goal of this panel was to show how college students could blend in their geekyness with their degree. So personally I'm going to say this panel crashed and burned. First off, I only had 4 people show up, which later I would find out that it wasn't that bad of numbers considering most other panels had about 7 people in them. Playing off this I had designed this panel to be interactive, and the panel topic really didn't apply to the 4 people I had in there, so it was hard to get the audience participation I needed for this panel to be successful. On top of this I just talked way too fast and burned through my material way too quickly. So yes, I will admit that my first panel of the con failed......
After my panel we stuck around for the next panel.
7pm: "Join our Makeup Contest Host Jackie Butler and 2 time SyFy Channel FaceOff Contestant Kevon Ward as they talk about being a Freelance Special FX Makeup and Prop Artist for Indie Films and stage."
-Jackie has used sticks as exposed bones to save money.
-She would like to teach classes someday since there really isn't any schools for makeup in her area.
-Sculptex is a good type of clay to start because it does not dry.
-Smoothon is a popular product.
-There is a local Reynolds for supplies. (Reynolds Advanced Materials, 3920 Grape St. Denver)
-Sometimes makeup artists have to remind directors to prioritize people in makeup due to the makeup not lasting all day and the comfort level of the actor.
-alcohol based paints are harder to sweat off.
