Blue Beetle (2023)

For me Blue Beetle in this movie is DC's version of Spiderman. Both are young people that get their power by accident. But the main reason they are similar is because their over active moral code gets people killed, including close family members. No spoilers past that, but their morals override what needs to be done to protect people. This is the main reason why I do not like Spiderman. Both of these characters also seem to create a lot of bad situations because of their personal choices where as other superheroes are normally dealing with issues they did not personally create.

The plot of the movie is driven by character relationships and how Latinx families work. Of the characters the ones that actually stood out for me was Jaime's uncle and grandma. His uncle was played by George Lopez who was absolutely amazing in this role. He stood out above all of the other characters and stole every scene he was in. The you have the fighting grandma who has her own 'back story' that makes you cheer for her in all of the raid scenes. She was played by Adriana Barraza. I hope we see more of this feisty grandma.

Grandma can kick some serious butt.

The special effects were good. This is the first DC movie where the special effects felt like they could be a part of that world and not overdone CGI. I would say visually, that this DC movie showed that they are finally starting to look at how Marvel does CGI and trying to replicate it. The merger between the beetle and the boy was well done and it was funny how his family reacted to him with no clothes.

When you armor can create any weapon you can think of why not make a buster sword. He must be a Final Fantasy fan.

Warm colors were used in the family's house to show the warmth of family and this contrasted to the film's overall use of the color blue and use of blue light (cool lighting).

Since this movie reminded me too much of Spiderman, I just can't score it very high. I'll give it 3 stars out of 5 or a C only because it had great side characters and the blending of special effects.
