The Munsters (2022)
Awhile ago when I first heard that they were going to be remaking the Munsters I wasn't sure what to expect. Remakes very rarely do justice to the original. Just watching this movie the first thing that really jumps out at you is the use of color. It is so vibrant and yet reminds viewers of a neon back alley. To me this jumped out so much more then the action in the opening scenes. I was not expecting the same slap stick comedy as the original TV show and thought the Rob Zombie, director and writer, would make it much darker. It did loose this the light heartedness even though some humor was kept, like when The Count wakes up with his back hurting and him going on that after 300 years everything gives out.
This movie focuses on the early relationship of the Munsters. We get to see Herman's creation and their wedding. The problem is that Herman makes a mistake that loses them their castle and them need to movie to Hollywood. Even though there was some minor things driving the plot forward there was no real climax, it was anti-climatic. Yes it was beautiful to watch, but there was noting in it that really grabbed you attention. Also the humor was so dry and dad joke'ish' that it really didn't keep you engaged.
I really wish that they would have cast different actors besides The Count, he was fine. For Jeff Daniel Phillips who played Herman, he looked the part but could not bring the blend of the father next door with the humor that Fred Gwynne displayed in his portrayal. Then there was Lily. The original Lily was played by the amazing Yvonne De Carlo. She brought a quirky mom next door feel to the character of Lily. Sheri Moon Zombie's version was too pompous and didn't have the same feel to it. I wish that Sheri would have shaped her portrayal more like Yvonne's because the direction she took Lily did not seem relatable and did not get viewers to invest emotion into what happened to her.
This is one of those movies you see once just to say you saw it, but past that it's not really worth re-watching unless you are a film student learning about color and lighting. I would give it 2.5 stars out of 5 or a C-.
