Smaller Geeky Events April 2023

8th: All C's Fan Expo

This was a nice little toy and collectable show. They had a wide spread of items you could buy and if you were geeking on the cheap products in the $1-5 price range could easily be found. There were also tables where you could play with the cards and games you just bought. One of the most popular trends I noticed at the event was tons of Pokémon stuff. I was surprised at the diversity of the Pokémon products and it seemed like nearly every booth had something Pokémon. Other items that were everywhere were Funko products. They did have a few special guests there as well. They did have a few food trucks, but most of the offerings were high priced for very little food. We actually decided it was better to just grab our food elsewhere since we had a second event to get to. This year there was good spacing and anyone with mobility issues had plenty of room to navigate. There were very few handicap parking spots though.

I really enjoyed the dancing R2-D2.

8th: Colorado Mineral & Fossil Spring Show

These smaller shows are fun to go to and just look around. Many times the specimens will be overpriced and people have to be careful of buying dyed or fake pieces. At this show they had their drawing each hour for door prizes and if kids checked in at the front door they had little gifts for them as well. The show was in 2 rooms, with half of the second room blocked off for wholesalers only. Each table had bright lights to help people see their specimens, but this helped to make it hot. There were some water stations around and the hotel did have a spot set up where they were selling food and drinks.

15th: Bigfoot Days Estes Park

This year was the first time I had heard of this event happening even though the first year was last year. I will say that for the most part this event was well run for the most part. The city had free parking near the visitor center and then you could take a trolley or shuttle from there for free to the event. This shuttle also stopped at a few hotels as well.

The visitor center also had some bigfoot gear on sale, but better priced goods could be found at the actual event.

The main part of the event was at Bond park and the town hall. There were a few panels that were further away and not really accessible for people with mobility issues due to the distance and there was no shuttles to the other location. There was a good variety of little booths to shop at, but food and drink was limited. You could not only find big foot products, but products of all different cryptids. If you like folklore in general you may enjoy this event. They could actually really expand this event into a whole cryptid con.

In addition to the shopping, they had some guests that specialize in bigfoot hunting like Buck & Jeff (Mountain Monsters), Matt Moneymaker,  and Dr. Mireya Mayor. We only got to see the Mountain Monsters panel because the other two guests had their panels way off at another location. Each guest did also have a table where they were doing meet and greets with people while signing autographs. The Mountain Monster panel was fun, but at the same time it also raised some questions. One of the members of the audience, who we had talked to in line and was ex-military, asked them if they were given real ammo by the crew since they were running around the woods and not following any gun safety. They sad of course they had real ammo since they were in the woods, but they would not address their lack of basic gun safety practices. They tried to justify it by saying they had grown up hunting, but they should know better then what they present on TV. Also since they are role models on TV they should be following basic gun safety measures. I wish they would act a little more responsible, but for an entertainment show what do you expect. I long ago stopped viewing shows on the History Channel, Travel Channel, or Science channel as anything entertainment since they have mixed in so much that is just not real or drama, just to get viewers.

Overall, the event was good and we will be going back next year.
