Pokemon Journeys (Free Comic Book Day 2022)

As a fan of the Pokemon games and toys, I've found it hard to get into the print media for the fandom. They never seem as interesting as the games. This comic preview had two different stories in it.

Pokemon Journeys

In this one, the two main characters get carried out to the middle of nowhere on the back of a wild Lugia. The best part of this one was the two page spread of when the Lugia takes them under the water and you get to see all of the different water Pokemon.

It just wasn't all that interesting because it follows the classic story line of something causing a character to get lost and then find their way back. I have a feeling that the rest of this story focuses on the two characters have to use team work to find their way home. Too predictable.

Pokemon Adventures

The story in this one is that there is an amazing Pokemon trainer, but he has locked himself up in his room because he did not like all of the press coverage he got. This one just felt like the main character was a whiny kid that needs to grow up. More then likely the author was trying to show someone with social anxiety, but they did not draw you into the story and you build no emotional connection to the character. This disconnect blocks you caring about him. They needed a bit more detailed explanation of his issues in this sample to draw readers in.

Overall, this Free Comic Book Day sample just wasn't that appealing and failed on its job of getting me to want to read more.
