The Umbrella Academy Season 1
Sometimes I'm a little late to jump into some fandoms. This is because I believe in geeking on the cheap, so I do not pay for a lot of special networks or streaming services. I usually wait until a series I'm interested in is released to DVD and has come down in price. The Umbrella Academy is one such show. I had heard a lot of talk about both the show and the comics and I wanted to check it out. So when I found the full first season boxed set on Black Friday and Walmart for only $10 I decided to go for it.
My mother (Mommy Geek) and I decided to try and watch this together while our cable was down. We ended up watching all three disks in 3 days because of how addicting it was and each episode left you with cliff hangers that made you want to find out what happens next. Now she is having us check all around town to see if anyone has copies of season 2, but we are coming up empty handed. Yes, the show is bloody in a lot of places, there is a lot of violence, and the series does push a lot of boundaries that viewers may have. Even with this I can see its appeal because I was also drawn into it.
The plot of the series is that several children were all born at the same time across the world to women that had not been pregnant until they all of a sudden gave birth at the same time. Each of the children ended up having some type of super power. One rich man bought of a bunch of them and decided to turn them into a crime fighting group and raised them in a very strict fashion. As the kids grew up they left home to live their own lives except one and then they are reunited as adults after their adoptive father passes away. These adopted siblings give new meaning to a dysfunctional family and then when you mix in a talking chimp and a robot you get a family full of complications.
The first thing that this series does well is that it draws you into the lives of the characters and helps you build connections to them. You have the family outcast, Vanya played by Elliot Page, that is struggling in the first season to figure out where she belongs in the world. Number Five as unusual emotional attachments, to a mannequin, but it makes you wonder what you would do to stay somewhat sane if you had been in his place with no human interactions for decades. In a way it reminded me of all of the Cast Away memes out there. Then you have characters like Klaus. Klaus is played by someone who is no stranger to the geek movie universe, Robert Sheehan. Sheehan has stared in many a geeky movie like Mortal Engines, Geostorm, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Even though many of his characters are side characters, he manages to build a depth to them. This is clear in his portrayal of Klaus and I can not think of another actor that could have pulled this character off.
Even though this first season covers only about a week of time in the world of the characters we get to learn so much about them and the world they live in. There is a secrete group of time travelers that are manipulating how events turn out and it is not in the best interest of humanity that they succeed at what they are doing. Personal lives and relationships must be pushed aside in all their forms so that our heroes can try and save humanity from an unexpected danger. This series has so many twists and turns that it leaves watchers wondering what will come next. Just as you think you have everything figured out something massive happens to takes it away from you.
It has been a long time since I have seen a series that engages the mind of its audience like this one does. It is complicated and messy, and I can't wait until I can get my hands on season 2.
