Nope (2022)

I'm going to warn you ahead of time this post will be full of SPOILERS. Only proceed if you are ok with that.

So going into this movie Mommy Geek thought it was supposed to be a horror comedy and I had tried to warn her that it was not going to be a comedy like she was expecting (something like the Scary movies). I was right.

So the plot of this movie is that a valley has been taken over by an "alien." It hides in a cloud that never movies. This is the first theater release movie I have seen that shows that an alien ship is not a ship, but the alien itself. At the same time they way they build up this film it could just be an animal species that has always been here. There are a lot of really slow parts of this movie where they struggle to do character development and build the plot, but these areas could have been handled much differently and just done better. A large part of this movie is just boring. They also waste a lot of time on things that have nothing to do with the overall plot of the movie or the main character. For example, a side character had a traumatic event in his life that happen when he was a child actor and a chip went crazy on set killing people. THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOVIE!!!!! I could have understand if they had said it was an ex-space chimp and it had seen something up in space that had messed up its mind, but no, it was just a normal chimp that had gone wild. They could have cut out all of the parts relating to this and movie goers wouldn't have seen any difference and the production team could have used the time wasted on it to actually do something productive. Like for example, it would have been cool if they would have covered more of what happened inside the belly of the beast. Having a CGI monkey bound on people is no where as interesting as what they could have done with the digestive processes of the creature. The best parts of this movie were at the end when the creature changed shape. It would have been cool if they would have went into more of why it changed shape. Then they could have expanded the end. Was she able to actually kill it? Did its body just keep floating or did it fall to the ground and some point and what could they learn about it? This movie was just filled with failures of what it could have been.

It was pointless to include a victim of the monkey attack. This was unneeded ad was a waste of time for the makeup artists.

The acting was just ok. The character of OJ could have been better with a different actor in it. This actor just didn't seem to know how to show emotion. The character of the sister, played by Keke Palmer, was just so much more interesting and well done. Palmer out shinned all of her co-stars and showed real character development has the movie progressed. I was hoping more from Steven Yuen, but much of the stuff relating to him, like the monkey, should have been cut out to make the movie better.

The special effects were actually well done. Like I said before, it would have been great if they would have expanded more on when the alien changed shape. Then there was the massive dump that the alien took on their house. I understand that the alien was supposed to be having stomach issues due to the metal horse they had fed it, but that doesn't explain why what was coming out was mostly blood. Most people have had diarrhea, and it doesn't resemble what goes in the other end very much. The "blood" would have been processed beyond what it appeared. It would have made more sense for it to be brown since deoxygenated blood would be brown any way. I can understand them keeping it red for a scare tactic, but it makes very little sense to people that know anything about the human body or biology. This is a good example of where the effects team could have improved things if they would have just done a little research instead of wasting time on thins that don't matter (the stupid CGI chimp).

Any way, I give this movie 1 star out of 5 or an F grade. This movie could have been so much more, but the people that worked on the film just fail the audience.
