Clementine Issue 1 (Free Comic Book Day 2022)
The storyline for Clementine is slightly interesting. Like I would want to learn more about how she lost her leg and more on where she is going. For me where the story loses points is on the artwork. It feels rushed and unfinished. It's even blurry at points. I feel that the artist could use some clean up including on the line work. This story fits into the world of the Walking Dead, and if you are familiar with that world and the distrust between people you will easily be able to jump in on understanding this comic otherwise seeing the distrust between humans in a world that has been taken over by zombies may seem a little odd. I think that is the thing about both zombies and post apocalyptic worlds, is that they can show both the best and worst of humanity.

Sloppy/muddy at work. Horror comics will sometimes do this to make them seem "dark and horrible," but there are other ways to present these same types of moods. |
The next story in here was Everyday Hero Machine Boy. I actually thought that this story was really cute. I would also like to learn more about ow he came to live with a human family. The artwork was much more crisper and in line with the art that I have come to expect of American artists. I understand that everyone has their own style, but when the art work is distracting you from the story in a bad it's time to move on to a different series. This one though is good and I think kids would like it. In this one the hero really wants to get a ticket to see his idols.
The last story in this book was Sea Serpent's Heir. This one the art was ok as well, but what stood out was the coloring. One of the underwater pictures was actually beautiful and I actually wished there would have been more scenes like that. Teenage girls could relate to the main character in their on going fight to break boundaries and find out where they fit into the world. I actually want to see where this comic will go.

The picture I took of this does not do it justice. Some of the detail in the color was lost. |
Overall this was a really think comic for Free Comic Book Day even though it had three comics in one. This one was worth me picking up and I would recommend checking it out. Comics like these are good introductions to series and it helps you to figure out what things attract you to the comic. For me the art work has to draw me in and then I need good characters to keep my interest. At least the 3rd story in here did that for me and I would be willing to try more of the Sea Serpent's Heir. 4 out of 5 or a B.
