Colorado Anime Fest 2022: A Different Perspective

Below is Mommy Geek’s notes and impressions from Colorado Anime Fest this year.

Panels

YAY HAPPY FUN TIME JAPANESE GAME SHOW

Notes:

-        This group put Easter Eggs on about 5 to 7 chairs that contained 2 pieces of candy. They also hide3 golden eggs taped to underside of 3 chairs. If you set in those chairs, you got to be in the game. So 3 contestants.

-        They threw out stuffed toys from the stage. The only ones that could get them were people that were up close. They did not even try to get any to the back of the room.

-        There were too many people in the room. There were people setting on the floors and standing against the walls. They were also blocking the exit which is a fire hazard.

 Overall Impressions:

-        The main person was very rude. She wanted me to leave the room so they could get everything ready. She was advised that due to a medical reason and ADA that moving from a cool room to a hot hall would be bad. She insisted that I leave. But a nice member of the group said that it should be ok for me to stay. The main person said ok but I was not allowed to move, talk to anyone or participate in anyway. Everything she said and the way she said it was rude, hurtful, belittling and against ADA if not open discrimination.

-        The situation was reported to the Con who did speak to the person. The Con did a great job at handling it.

-        They should not be aloud to do any panels until they are advised of  to handle ADA. What ADA is, the rules and requirements with it. They need to learn politeness and kindness. I would recommend that the con actually develop some type of quick training for panelists on ADA and other related issues. Maybe the could get Geek Colorado's Chief Geek (AKA Julia) to build it for them.

COLORADO DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

 Notes:

-        Slide show detailing what the festival is and the history of it.  First one in Colorado was in 2001. The boats can be rented and they are 40 feet long and 5 feet wide. It takes about 25 people to operate them.

-        It also evolved into the Dragon Film Festival and their mentoring program that they do. The film festival is done in early March.

-        A very nice video was shown called “WHERE DID ZODIAK SIGNS COME FROM”

-        This year Dragon Boat Festival is on 7-23-22 and 7-24-22 and starts at 6 am. There will be around 24 food vendors. The Race starts at 8 am. Takes place on Sloan's Lake.

Overall Impressions:

-        The presenter was very nice. She allowed pictures to be taken. She was very knowledgeable on her subject . She did a verbal quiz and handed out lots of nice prizes.

POP GOES THE CULTURE! The History of Asians in American Pop Culture

 Notes:

-        The presenter went into detail of history:

o   1849 The Chinese came to US

o   1882 Chinese Exclusion Act

o   Then the Japanese came to US

o   Talked about the first Asian actors

o   He talked about how Japanese people were viewed by Americans after Pearl Harbor Attack:

§  Very yellow skin

§  Very bad buck teeth with very sharp fangs.

§  How Dr Seuss did very bad , damaging posters for US showing the above stuff

o   How white people were taking Asian parts and portraying Asians in plays and movies

Actors like Hepburn in 1944, Brando in 56, Rooney in 61, and Jerry Lewis in 80, Yule Brynner in 1956 in the King and I

He showed commercials and how they have changed.

-        He made some mistake when he talked about Bruce Lee. He should remember that Mr Lee has a large following in Colorado and the US as a whole.

Tabemasho! Let's Eat! The History of Japanese Food in America

Overall Impressions:

-        He was very ego centered. At one point when asked about a certain restaurant in town he stated that he new the owner and could call ahead and skip the lines. Which made everyone else feel bad and less as a person.

-        He thought that a white person would not have taken Asian food to elementary school or any school for that. So he was very wrong on that point, not caring that a lot of white people eat more Asian food everyday than they eat American food. I actually sent my daughter to school with lunch foods from many different cultures. Even in grade school she enjoyed foods like Kimchi. I wish she would have called him out on it but she didn't even though he showed a lot of disrespect towards her.

-        This started out good but ended up making insults of a lot of races.

Building

The building was way to hot for the number of people they had. No air conditioning to cool things down. There was not enough seating for the attendees to set on. Chairs were too small for larger sized people, anyone over 120 pounds had trouble with most of the seats.

Bathrooms ran out of paper, soap, and one door was almost impossible to open that was on the second floor.

They had a night time bar area with themed drinks, but there was not enough seating for people.

The staff did not know how to handle the fire drill or emergency situations that may happen at the same time.

Overall

It would have been a great con at a different location.
