Love and Monsters (2020)

 

Even though the main character is driven by “love” to go topside after a man made apocalypse, it is more of a tale about figuring out your own abilities and becoming the best version of yourself under whatever the world throws at you. The main storyline is that humans stop a meteor from hitting Earth by blowing it up, but all the chemicals rain back down on us causing mutations in most creatures.

As with most movies you have to ignore science and just take it for fun or you could be like me and giant insects just ‘bug’ you because you know that insects are limited in size due to how they breath…. Anyway, at least many of the other creatures were interesting or cool. My favorite were the sky jelly’s but even then I was think it was odd that they were harmless considering for the most part you don’t want to get stung by a jelly fish…ok moving away from science. 

I did like the plot overall because the main character had to learn about both himself and the new world they were all living in and then he takes what he learned and shares it with others. I will admit there were several scenes that drove a knife in both my mom and I and that was any time the dog was in danger. I know many would consider it weird that we were more ok with the other characters dying then the dog. Spoiler: for those with the same issue the dog does live. 

For the most part the acting was ok. No one really stood out in a good or bad way. I was actually kind of happy when I saw Michael Rooker was in it. He has a habit of popping up in all kinds of things and normally he’s the smart one you want on your side.

Overall, I would give this movie 3 stars out of 5 or a C. I wouldn’t quite consider this a “classic B” movie because you can tell they spent money on the special effects, but many aspects of it still felt like it could be a SyFy channel movie with a bigger budget. 

Reminds me of Tremors.
