Spider Man: No Way Home (2021)

Even before seeing the new film a friend of mine, who is a big Spiderman fan, said it was not only the best Spiderman movie, but also the best Marvel movie yet. At the same time I was already aware of some of the other actors that have done the character would be in it to give it a 'spiderverse' feel. This gave me some apprehension since Toby Maguire suffers from Kristen Stewart syndrome in that he is not able to really emote emotions. So just knowing that they were bring back past failures did not give me high hopes for what the movie would be.

After seeing the film I will saw that it was good, but not amazing. Tom Holland has proven that he is the best Spiderman yet. Some of it is due to the very physicality that he can bring to the role. As an educator I thought it was very funny when Dr. Strange got made at Peter for not reaching out to the school first before he was willing to try magic. Even though Dr. Strange had a very small part overall in the movie, it was still meaningful. If Peter would have just listened to him a least one character that died wouldn't have had to. I personally think that this movies shows how wrong things can go if you try to push your moral values on others. With Peter trying to do the "right" thing how he saw it, many things went wrong and there was death where there didn't have to be. In a way this movie shows how naive people can be when they think they are doing the right thing.

The special effects was on par with other Marvel movies and nothing really stood out good or bad. The acting for the most part fit the characters. There was some humor from when they brought in the other Peters, but there was also an awkwardness that I don't think they intended. I will admit that the funniest part of the movie was when they the other Peters found out that Toby's version could make his own webs with his body. I will admit that I would have been interested in how that worked as well.

The last bit of the movie was filled with tragedy in a few different ways. I won't go into spoilers, but there is death and everyone needs to forget who Spiderman is in order to save the multiverse. This does set up for more movies where they can have a lot of restarts on things. I didn't like the end though since it shows Peter breaking his promise to one of the most important people in his life. To me it seems that the Spiderman movies are driven by Peter's inability to do things. This is one of the reasons why I'm not fond of the character in general. Even the comics were much the same where many of the bad things that happen are because of Peter and then he needs to do clean up.

I'd give it 3 stars out of 5 mostly because it just did not break the trends of the previous movies in any good way and does nothing to truly move Spiderman forward as a character. It just locks him into the same patterns of behavior. There needs to be some real character development to save Spiderman as a character and get new interest in him.
