Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

The second Venom movie wasn’t what I expected. To be truthful I didn’t know what to expect, but I was not expecting to be as under whelmed as I was. I’m used to sequels not being good and Marvel has been hit or miss with theirs. I wouldn’t say it was bad, but if it were to come on T.V. I would only watch it if there wasn’t anything else on and I won’t be buying a copy of it. It just felt empty compared to the first one. It didn’t raise any type of emotion or pull you in.

First, I really wanted more character development in the character of Cletus Kasady. They only give you the slightest taste when he tells Brock that he was abused by his family. SPOILER: he could have been a great character, but then to just have if get his head bit off was just such a lack luster end it was pathetic. It would also have been cool to have had some banter between his symbiont.  It would have also have been nice to find out why Venom reacted the way he did when he saw that Carnage was red. What does being red mean? I want more information and I'm disappointed that they did not give anything on it. Then, I also wanted more of Frances Barrison. They could have done so much with her voice as a weapon. Another waste.

Then the film did not have the same level of humor in it over all that made the first one latch on to your heart strings. The funniest part of the movie was when Venom was in Mrs. Chen. The had the chance to build more of it into the film, but didn’t.

The ending was also all wrong. Having Brock on the run…then there was of course Marvel’s added scene in the credits that just did not make sense. There was a weird time slip or the such. The most I can think of that they are doing is playing into the Spiderman and Dr. Strange movie. We’ll have to wait and see, but even as an insert scene it was lacking in making you want to learn more or see the movie it was linked to.

Then when I was looking up pictures for me to include here, I saw that it was directed by Andy Serkis. I think that he needs to stay where his talents lie which is in front of the camera and not behind it. Too bad they didn’t bring back Ruben Fleischer who did the first movie. 3 stars out of 5 or a C and I feel like I’m giving it that high of a grade out of pity for Marvel.
