NDK 2021: Overview

Yes, I know it took me awhile to do the overview write up for this con. One main reason is how busy I am and the other is just how disappointed I was this year.

Staying Safe during covid.

This was the first year that the con was at the Gaylord hotel and a large part of my disappointment was with the hotel itself. Many other people I talked to and my friends that attended were also disappointed. Things were just bad all around. The hotel was not cleaning up their trash, parking was a nightmare because they don’t have enough parking for large groups/conventions, a lack of water, horrible food and cheating people out of money based on portion size, and just all around crap. The hotel is beautiful, but my experience was so bad that if it is here again next year I think I won’t go. By this point I would have already bought my tickets for the next year, but hasn’t happened yet.

Half a bowl of food? I did get the hotel to apologize for this after the con, but how many people were cheated out of their money.

It was cheaper and easier to just by the snack goods out of the dealers room.

Then there was the con. So I had a few issues with NDK as well. First off, the sewing craft lady decided to make the panel times run on her schedule instead of the time she was supposed to start. This caused a lot of issues about people with disabilities not being able to get in even if they had been sitting in the sofa area where they were supposed to wait and then there was a whole line of people waiting to get in and no one ever came out to let them know that there was no chance for them to get in. I made a complaint to the NDK staff the first day she did it (she started a half hour early). The next day we found out from other people that had tried to go to her same panel that she had done it again, but started an hour early that time. NDK was not keeping track of the panelists even when complaints had been made against them. They also didn’t have chairs by the panel rooms like they had in the past for people with disabilities and were having them wait for panels in one area. There were many times that the workers forgot to come over and get the people for the panel they wanted. The hotel overall needed more sitting and dining areas. The food was also for the most part a long way away so people with disabilities had to travel to get what they needed which was hard. They really need to get a new person to lead the disability part of the con.

One of the best furry costumes I've seen.

The only thing I did like about the con was that the dealers room was much more spread out and there is a lot of room for it to grow. With things being spaced out more there was not as much pushing and shoving going on.

The art auction area felt really empty compared to previous years.

There was also a geeky car show going on outside.

There were some cool options at the model make and take this year. There was also a really nice volunteer in there that worked with my mom on some challenges she was having since my kit was more complex and I couldn't help her as well.

I will do an additional post that will cover all the panels I got to since some of them were really good.

While sitting down another con goer set this plushy down on the foot stool and I was entirely distracted by it having a butt hole. I still do not understand why it's makers thought it needed this. Very weird and odd.

My score for this con would be 2 stars out of 5 or a D. It wasn’t the worst con I have ever been to, but ranks in the top 3 worst cons I’ve ever been to.
