Halloween Kills (2021)

I haven’t been to a movie premiere since Crimson Peak. So I was super excited when I got tickets to the screening of Halloween Kills. Before the movie started I was talking to someone about how they had the seats blocked off and reading the signs on them. When we got to the press section she said, “I don’t know why the press are even here. They don’t like horror movies and just give them a bad review any way.” I had to laugh to myself since I was there to review the movie.

I actually went into this movie thinking about what she had said. I do like horror movies, but I will admit that the Halloween series is not one of my favorites. Part of the reason is that they have not ever fully explained why it is basically impossible to kill Michael. Is he truly a damned creature, is he a mutant like Wolverine that can self-heal, they just leave it too open which is boring. People like to know how things work, we’re curious creatures and if a series leaves you in the dark for too long it just becomes a rusty shell.

The movie was very much done in an 80s style which can be seen in both the opening credits and other aspects of the film. It actually felt grainy instead of the smoothness that most modern films have. Even though we knew this was going to be a blood bath, there seemed to be just too many side characters in the film and less interaction with the main or historical characters. It seemed that Jamie Lee Curtis was just there to lend continuity to the film and her actual presence wasn’t really needed. There was some weird humor built into the film. Some of it I found funny, but at other times people were laughing and I could only wonder why.

Spolier!!!!!!!!! So of course they don’t end up actually killing Michael and it is all set up for the next film. I was actually disappointed that they didn’t pull it off. I kept mentally yelling at the characters that once he’s down don’t stop. They should have cut off his head, but then the movie producers couldn’t make more films. The film did show though what can happen when people let the fear take control and how the average person can become a monster.

So then back to what the lady had said to me…For someone that likes horror movies this just isn’t a good one.  Series that just keep going on and on do have an expiration date and this one is way past its. I was hoping this would be the last one, but no. 2 stars out of 5 or a D.

This was the line behind us, and not long after it was wrapping around the building.
Waiting for the show to start.

A special thanks to Bret for letting me know about the event.

10/16/21 Update: So while doing research for Halloween trivia I found out more about Michael and it turns out his secret has only been revealed in one movie which I have not seen. To me this is a mistake by the movie makers, because unless someone has seen every one of the movies then they are missing out on very important information. So my stance is that the movie creators themselves have just created a disappointing film because of their lack of clear presentation. BTW his secret is, "he is the victum of an ancient Druid curse, which explains his inhuman strength and uncanny resiliency. Each child chosen to bear the curse of Thorn must sacrifice their next of kin on the night of Samhain." - https://www.usefultrivia.com/movie_trivia/horror_movie_trivia_index_ii.html
