Cult of Chucky (2017)
This was my first time watching Cult of Chucky. In the past the movies made sense with Chucky being a doll with a serial killer stuck in it. In this movie though Chucky was able to find a way to break his spirit into different dolls and people all because of a Voodoo spell he found on the internet. They must be getting desperate for a plot. I wish that they wouldn’t have messed with a good base story and moved it to the point that it is now so unbelievable that it doesn’t even hold a watcher’s interest by the halfway point.
For the most part the special effects were just ok. I’ve noticed in the newer movies that they have adjusted how they have done Chucky’s face. It is now too CGI. That is not normally something you hear me say since I love CGI, but in this film once again it just makes it feel too fake. The one scene that could have been good was the death by skylight. It too was taken too far and of course they had to have a head cut off. It would have been much more interesting if they would have just had the character impaled by all the pieces of glass.
The only good thing about this movie was Fiona Dourif’s performance of Nica. This actress can do good dramatic roles and then does crazy amazingly. Even though the character is in a wheelchair she keeps proving that she is not helpless. Yes, Chucky does get what he wants in the end, but it is because he has help. Even with her being the main star of the movie, her performance was not enough to save this disaster. 2 stars out of 5 or a D-.
