James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction

The over all point of this series is to look at different aspects of science fiction films. The series includes interviews of different people that work in the industry, like directors, producers, and actors. This reminded me of AMC's History of Horror series. I'm wondering if they will also do one for fantasy films.

Aliens – Episode 1

The spend what feels like too much time on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Personally, I never liked that movie and found it boring. The section on language was also to log with a focus on Arrival. Another movie I didn’t like. They said that the play with time was to show how her brain was being reshaped by learning the alien language. I see that now that they told you, but when I first saw that movie that message did not come through and it just felt disjointed. It was an interesting concept but not done well. That movie was a waste of time, even Jeremy Renner could not save it, and them talking about it was a waste of time. I felt like they could have picked better movies to show the alien experience. 2 stars out of 5 or a D.

Space – Episode 2

Star Trek has broken so many barriers over the years it was nice hearing them talk about how its focus was “we can do better.” Hearing George Lucas talk about making Star Wars for 12-year-olds and that 12 year olds are ‘smarter then the rest of us’ really hit home for me. I have always been pulled towards Star Wars and oddly enough 12 years old was when I started college. It really felt like he was talking to me. It was amazing that Milla Jovovich could still say Leeloo’s full name.

Monsters – Episode 3

In this episode 7on of the topics they talk about is women over coming monsters. They had Sigourney Weaver and Milla Jovovich talking about this subject. Both of these women to me represent what the female action hero is. The characters that they have played have influenced science fiction and fantasy so much. The episode ran through both classic monster movies and modern ones. It was great hearing the actors and directors talk about different aspects of these movies. There was even a section on the gorilla whale. This is the first episode of the series that I watched and it got me wanting to watch more. This episode gets 5 stars out of 5 or a A.
