Eli Roth’s History of Horror Take 2
Watchathon is back so I got to catch up on some of the older episodes.
Season 1 Episode 1 – Zombies
It starts out looking at the Walking Dead and then goes back in time. It does pose one important question that I think is part of the attraction of zombie movies, “Who would I become?”. I think that people that watch zombie movies like to think about what they would do to survive. Another interesting thing is that they said that Shaun of the Dead was a social commentary on where Brittan was during that time. Overall a good episode. 4 stars out of 5 or a B+.
Season 1 Episode 4 – The Demons Inside
A lot of this episode focuses on possession. Classic movies like The Exorcist are covered. I was never a fan of this film, but at the same time I can appreciate it for what it was. I didn’t know that in the bed scene that the actress actually got her back fractured by the force of them moving her around. One of them films they cover that at the time of this writing I have not yet seen is Get Out. They talked about how this film is a take on current race relations. 3 stars out of 5. I felt that this episode wasn’t has informative as some of the other episodes in the series.
Season 1 Episode 5 – Killer Creatures
I like when they talked about Gremlins being a gateway horror film that can be used to get kids interested in horror. At the same time, I’m still conflicted over what age is a good age to start showing kids horror films. Then has a parent you need to be prepared to have the kid freak out on you and want to sleep with you because they are scared. This is a topic that I will look into more someday. This episode I feel like it was too much of a mixed bag of different creatures. It would have been better if they narrowed it down. I feel that it was too high level of a look at the topic to really be worth the time. 2 stars out of 5 or a D.
Season 1 Episode 6 – Vampires
This was an amazing episode that talks how the vampire film includes commentary in them that relates to social issues like homosexuality before it was approved in larger society. That is one thing that this series brings out in a lot of their topics, the social issues. This series could be good for not only film students, but also students studying topics like sociology, anthropology, and even ethnic studies. One of the interesting pieces of trivia that it had was that the vampire blood in From Dusk Till Dawn was green so that they wouldn’t have as many issues with the ratings people. 5 stars out of 5 or an A.
