Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
This was actually a great movie. I was presently surprised with how bad the last two Godzilla movies were. This one had the perfect blend of the human side and the monster side. The special effects were also beautifully done, although I will admit when they were in the center of the Earth it was disorientating. I wish it would have been a little clearer what happed to Kong’s people. It also seemed like they were actually advanced.
Then at first on one of the characters I found myself asking if it was really who I thought it was and then I had to verify it after the movie. It turns out that one of my favorites Japanese actors played one of the quasi-bad guys. Shun Oguri is best know in otaku circles for his portrayal of the marble eyed prince Rui in Hana Yori Dango but has done works like Gintama and Sukiyaki Western Django. It was good to see that they included at least Japanese person in what was a Japanese franchise.
Some of the concepts in the movie were interesting. They did throw science and physics out the window more times then I could count. When I talked to a friend, Chris, he warned me about this. He said that he felt that they were trying to get away from a more fantasy focused type of sci-fi by not including the little twins from the original films. I feel that if they really wanted to do this they could have done a better job on things like the boat scene or you could just bring in the magical twins and make older fans happy. The one that really got me was Kong sized electro shock. Some of the science concepts I did find a little interesting like how would gravity work at the center of the Earth or mind control on a robot.
I will admit that this move gave me some hope for future Godzilla movies. It may also make the next generation like them as well. Now we just need to make sure that no one sees the last two movies ( the last Kong movie wasn’t too bad). 5 stars out of 5 or an A.
