X MEN vol. 1 (Free Comic Book Day 2020)

 

Even though this was supposed to be an X-Men focused sampler, that section of this comic just did not draw you in. There was no key action, cliff hanger, or anything like that. There was slightly interesting character that looked like a Betta fish. When I did a few different worded searches on Google nothing turned up about that character. Too bad since it was the only point of interest in this volume. The X-Men normally has so much potential, because it plays with human diversity in so many different ways.

Spoilers: The second story was the one that grabbed me. There was something causing power outages and Iron Man was trying to get back to Stark Tower. The problem was what was causing the power issues was also impacting his suit. Needless to say he has several impacts (mini-crashes) including loosing a foot when he hit a plane. The image of his flying foot was massively impactful. The final panel shows Piper beside of him and the reader not knowing if he is dead or not. That is the way to write a short impactful sampler.

Overall, I would say that this Free Comic Book Day sampler averaged to ok. If the X-Men story would have been as good as the Iron Man one my score would have been nearly perfect, but it just fell so far short. I give it 3 stars out of 5 or a C based off of the impact of the X-Men story on the overall comic.
