The New Mutants (2020)

I’m actually going to break this movie review into 2 parts, Movie and Theater. This was my movie back in theaters since COVID.

Movie:

The movie starts out really fast and then drops to a grind. It then starts to pick up again, but not it the way you would think. It flowed and appeared to be more of a horror movie. This is the product of what you would get if you mixed an X-Men movie with a horror movie and then through in some twisted native folklore. It was not what I expected and not I do not mean that in a good way. There were plenty of scenes that would make up jump and it was more suspenseful then previous movies. Most other X-Men films have focused more on the type of action common in superhero type movies. This one played more with the psyche and focused on scares. Some of the character’s abilities were interesting, but some were so complex and layered that they seemed more magical and did not fit into the X-Men universe. To be truthful I never saw Logan because I did not like where they were taking the series from the previews. Then I decided to give this movie a chance to see where it would go. I was disappointed. You could have taken the X-Men references out of the film and could have just had a weird horror film. This movie was very un-X-Men like and I would not recommend it to any fans of the X-Men universe. 3 stars out of 5 or a C, and I gave it that high of a score because of the special effects.

Theater:

AMC Arapahoe Crossing. We had stopped going to this theater for the most part before COVID due to its high prices when compared to Northfield. Our 2 tickets cost us $26 and some change. We had asked for the 2:30pm show, but when we got to the actual room at 2:10pm the previews were already going we went back out and it turned out there was no 2:30pm show just a 2pm one. The display was wrong and the person who sold us the ticked did not even pay attention to what time we had requested when she filled our request. When we asked for our money back the guy offered to walk us to our seats and help us find them in the dark. I would have just said no, but my mother wanted to stay. Also before we went to the room we stopped to look at the concessions. It turns out that they do not offer free refills if you order the large size like other theaters do (at least from my pre-COVID experience). So they really like taking money from people since these were at least as much or higher than the places that offered the free refills. The theater experience itself makes me not want to go back and I can’t wait until other theaters open. 2 stars out of 5 or a D, and they only get that score because the guy did help us get to our seats.
