2020 Book Reviews April-June

Here are my book reviews for the second quarter of the year. It's not a very long list this time due to my graduate classes taking up a lot of time and I have been down due to surgery. All the books you will find on this list are books, manga, and graphic novels that have an ISBN.

Fiction

Deadpool Vol. 5: The Wedding of Deadpool
The cover on this one was amazing and was what drew me to it. It is the whose who of the Marvel universe and I spent a lot of time just going character to character naming them. This comic is basically Deadpool running through his previous relationships (real and imagined). Cute and quick. 4 stars out of 5 or a B.

I, Vampire Vol. 1: Tainted Love by Joshua Hale Fialkov
This was another clearance find for me at 2nd and Charles and I can understand why. I just saw this as a vampire comic I had not read and grabbed it site unseen. Then when I got it home the inside art work (done by Andrea Sorrentino) was not as good as the cover art. I felt like the inside had been thrown together. Sections were also muddy. I feel that this comic would have been good if the art work was the same quality as the cover art. I feel like I run into this a lot where the cover catches you and then the inside is a disappointment. The plot was o.k. and it would be interesting to read more of if I didn't have to deal with the poor artwork. 2 stars out of 5 or a D.

My Boyfriend is a Vampire, Vol. 11-12 by Yu-Rang Han
This was a very cute series. I stumbled upon this 2 volume set in the clearance section of 2nd and Charles. It was really cheap and I don't mind picking up series in weird locations of the story line. This 2 part set gave me enough back information that I did not get lost and it made me want to read more of the series. One of the main characters keeps changing their gender and it makes from some interesting situations. 4 stars out of 5 or a B.

Rosario + Vampire: Season II, Vol. 6 by Akihisa Ikada
I just love this series and it has been awhile since I have either watched the anime or read the manga. I picked this up as a used copy at 2nd and Charles and this volume reminded me why I love the series so much. 5 stars out of 5 or an A+.

Rosario + Vampire: Season II, Vol. 8 by Akihisa Ikeda
This volume is both sad and full of the information you have been questioning since the series started. We get both the back story on Moka's mother and her, while also learning what the Rosario actually is. Some of it was so sad I kind of wish I hadn't read this one and just had unanswered questions. 4 stars out of 5 or a B.

Manga! Manga!: The World of Japanese Comics by Frederik L. Schodt
This book had a lot of older examples of Japanese manga. Several I was not familiar with and even a few I had never heard of. It is a great look at the manga industry and would make a good resource for someone doing a report/history of manga. 4 stars out of 5 or a B.
