Oculus Quest

1
One of my friends bought an Oculus Quest for her family as the family gift for this year. After talking about it both before and after Christmas she invited me over to try it. My first approach to this was to just pick a game and go. Not a good idea.

My friend had been talking about this game that simulates being on the international space station. So I started there, Mission: ISS. Bing mistake. First the game is very disorientating. It did simulate being in zero g to the point I got dizzy and nearly fell over. It made me have a new respect for the conditions that astronauts deal with and prove that I should never apply to be one. The graphics were amazing, but I had a hard time moving around because you have to combine controls on both hand remotes and control where you are looking at the same time. If you are new to this gaming system do not start here.

After having trouble with this game, my friend recommended that I try the base training system. This was actually a very entertaining training and not boring like I expected. It helped you figure out how to grab things and interact with your surroundings. You could throw things, hit them, and even cause different objects to interact with each other. I actually thought that just throwing the items could be a great way to get rid of stress. There was also a shooting section that I really enjoyed. I could have played this for hours. I kept replacing the high score on this section and felt slightly bad since the previous high score had been set by her sons. As a guest at someone’s house I normally try to avoid this, but I was just having so much fun.

From here I moved to the first person shooter game SuperHot VR. Even having played previous first person shooter games, I was not prepared for this game. At first I kept dying very quickly until I started to figure out where the weapons were to grab. This game is also hard because you cannot reload and once you are out of bullets you have to move on to the next weapon. This game also gives you things to throw, like stars and bottles. I found these items less usefully due to throwing accuracy. This game was very fun, but would have been better with more room to move around. My friend said that when her sons were playing they were all over the place and even rolling on the ground.

Lastly I was intrigued by Anne Frank House VR. It started out with a history video that included old footage and pictures from the time period. It did not give me the option to skip this opening. Once inside it became very hard to navigate. It took me about 15 minutes just to figure out how to move the bookcase with help. Once I got into the actual living area I was surprised by how much space they actually had. Growing up I had to read her journal, but the images I had built into my head was vastly different then what this showed. I picture a small attic that had been divided into even tinier rooms. I gave up with this VR after a while due to it not flowing very well and being difficult to figure out how to keep the tour moving.

After taking off the headset it took me about half an hour to readjust back to the real world. It was an interesting experience, but I do not see me every buying one. I wear glasses which could fit into the head set, but even with adjusting the straps I felt that I had to keep playing with the head gear to keep things in focus. The system my friend had cost around $400 and she was trying to pay for only a few games and trying to get most of the free games. To me it seems like a big investment, but you can hook it up to the TV so that others may see what you are doing. One of the games she loves playing is Red Matter, but I decided not to try that one yet. I would play games on this system again, but I would do it in only half hour chunks at max. To me this system just costs too much at present for me to get it taking into account my experience with it. For now I will just stick to my standard game systems until the VR technology gets cheaper.
