2019 Book Reviews

Here is a review of books that we I read in 2019. It will only cover up through December since December got its own post.

Fiction

Allies of the Night (Cirque du Freak #8)
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1)
I read this book because I loved both the movie and T.V. series. I did enjoy having the visulations of the characters in my head as I read and I could choose my favorite version from either the movie or series.
5 stars out of 5 or a A.

Daughter of the Blood
I do not honestly believe that this book would be published today if the author was trying to release it. There are several things about children in this that would not fly we in today's political/social climate. Anyone who has read this will understand what I mean.
2 stars out of 5 or a D.

Dark Peril
Yes this is paranormal smut.
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Dark Possession
This is also paranormal smut.
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Ender's Game
I really did try to like this book since it is considered a sci-fi classic, but it was so boring and drawn out. It could have been cut in half and been the better for it. I had seen the movie before reading the book and I believe that the movie is much better than the book. The movie was only average so that lets you know how little I think about the book.
2 stars out of 5 or a D.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
4 stars out of 5 or a B.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
5 stars out of 5 or a A.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
5 stars out of 5 or a A.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
4 stars out of 5 or a B.

Predator & Prey: Vampire
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Prince Lestat
It has been a long time since I tried to read an Anne Rice book. There for a while her books got really religious, which did not interest me. This was her slightly moving away from that. This is another book where it would have been better if she would have cut the length down and didn’t just put in a lot of filler stuff. Like the whole section about his adopted daughter could have been shortened.
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Professor Gargoyle (Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #1)
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Vampire Breath (Goosebumps #49)
4 stars out of 5 or a B.

Nonfiction

Fairies: Real Encounters With Little People
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

Supernatural Horror in Literature
2 stars out of 5 or a D.

Tales of Norse Mythology: Illustrated Edition
3 stars out of 5 or a C.

The Vampire: His Kith and Kin
The first thing I want to address is that Montague Summers is notorious for translation issues which was most evident in his translation of The Malleus Maleficarum, so when reading this I was very cautious about the information he presented. At the same time there were also large sections that he didn’t even bother to translate which took away greatly from this work. Only because I have studied other nonfiction vampire sources was I able to understand what was going on during some parts. I would not recommend this to someone new to the subject, but I think that it should at least be read if someone wants to make sure that a person as read all the ‘classics’ on the subject.
3 stars out of 5 or a C.
